Cardiac Pharmacology of the Cladoceran, Daphnia

چکیده

Acetylcholine has been demonstrated to speed the heart of several of the decapod crustacea (Welsh, 1939 a and b; Davenport, Loomis and Opler, 1940 and Davenport, 1941), the grasshopper (Hamilton, 1939), and LiMulus (Garrey, 1941). Is this reaction, which may be indicative of a neurogenic heart, a general characteristic of the arthropods? The pharmacology of the heart of the cladoceran, Daphnia, was examined to extend the observations to one of the lower groups within the phylum. Obreshkove, 1941, has demonstrated the action of acetylcholine, eserine, and atropine on intestinal movement in Daphnia. Acetyl choline stimulates intestinal movement, its action is inhibited by atropine and potentiated by eserine.

Production of Daphnia epiphium, A method for mass production and rapid revival

A new and suitable breeding method for inducing asexual or sexual reproduction (opium pneumonia) of Daphnia Magna is described in the laboratory. Drying and dehydration cause the production of epiphium epiphium with rapid hatching. In the present study, the effect of many different parameters such as pesticides, light periods and light intensity, sediments, culture oxygen levels, dark period, a...

Molecular impact of propiconazole on Daphnia magna using a reproduction-related cDNA array.

We have developed a first version cDNA microarray of the cladoceran Daphnia magna. Through Suppression Subtractive Hybridisation PCR (SSH-PCR) 855 life stage-specific cDNAs were collected and used to document the toxicological mode of action of the pesticide propiconazole. DNA sequencing analysis revealed gene fragments related to important functional classes such as embryo development, energy ...

Rapid evolution of tolerance to toxic Microcystis in two cladoceran grazers.

Evolutionary adaptation could assist organisms to cope with environmental changes, yet few experimental systems allow us to directly track evolutionary trajectory. Using experimental evolution, evolutionary tolerance to Microcystis aeruginosa was investigated in two cladocerans (Daphnia pulex and Simocephalus vetulus) to test the hypothesis that cladoceran grazers rapidly adapt to toxic cyanoba...

How does the cladoceran Daphnia pulex affect the fate of Escherichia coli in water?

The faecal indicator Escherichia coli plays a central role in water quality assessment and monitoring. It is therefore essential to understand its fate under various environmental constraints such as predation by bacterivorous zooplankton. Whereas most studies have examined how protozooplankton communities (heterotrophic nanoflagellates and ciliates) affect the fate of E. coli in water, the cap...

Water mite predation on zooplankton of a tropical lake.

Water mite (Krendowskia sp.) predation on zooplanktonic species from Lake Monte Alegre (São Paulo State, Brazil) was tested in laboratory experiments. One cladoceran, Daphnia gessneri, two copepods, Tropocyclops prasinus and Thermocyclops decipiens, and Chaoborus larvae III and IV were supplied as prey to adult mites. The cladoceran Ceriodaphnia cornuta was used in the experiment with mite nymp...
